Maalox can be used topically to treat diaper rashes.

Many pediatricians and parents swear by Maalox for diaper rashes. But despite numerous reports of anecdotal success, there is no evidence that it works.

It makes sense that Maalox may help. The aluminum in Maalox may act as an astringent to help dry up a rash. Some also suggest that Maalox helps by "neutralizing" acids in the stool. Parents just dab liquid Maalox on the irritated skin.

Tell people there's no proof that Maalox helps clear up diaper rashes. Warn that babies' skin is more permeable than adults. And with diaper dermatitis, the skin may not be intact which may further increase permeability. This could possibly put babies at risk for absorption of aluminum and magnesium from Maalox.
