The "take before meals" auxiliary labels are not needed for proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole (Prilosec), etc.

"Proton pumps" work in the stomach lining to help promote acid release. Acid is needed to digest food. But too much causes reflux symptoms...pain, burping, etc.

Proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, lansoprazole, etc) stop these acid pumps from releasing too much harmful acid.

Rx labels for PPIs often include an auxiliary sticker to instruct patients to "take before meals."
