Many patients aren't using their insulin pens correctly...increasing their risk of hypoglycemia.
They don't realize they need to mix NPH and other insulin suspensions before each use. Otherwise, large clumps of insulin may flow out during initial injections...leading to hypoglycemia.
Tell patients to gently mix insulin suspensions before each dose. Have them roll the pen in their palms...and tip it...10 to 20 times before each use.
