Powered brushes may have a slight edge...if brushing technique is less than perfect.

Part of their advantage may be that they have timers and detailed instructions to encourage more thorough brushing. They can reduce plaque and gingivitis more than a manual toothbrush...but aren't proven to reduce the risk of cavities or periodontal disease.
