Watch for Patients Taking Iron Every OTHER Day
You might see patients taking oral iron supplements (ferrous sulfate, etc) every OTHER day...instead of daily, BID, or TID.
Oral iron commonly causes nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, and other GI side effects.
The hope is that alternate-day dosing will improve tolerability by increasing the amount of iron that's absorbed. UNabsorbed iron is thought to be the culprit for GI issues.
