The government is now urging manufacturers to reduce or eliminate thimerosal as a preservative in pediatric vaccines.

The concern is that the cumulative amount of mercury from the thimerosal could exceed safe limits in young infants.

Currently, infants get up to 12 shots in their first 6 months.
