Bristol-Myers Squibb is launching Maxipime (MAXI-peem, cefepime), the first "fourth-generation" injectable cephalosporin.
In general, the first-generation agents are primarily active against gram-positive bacteria. Second and third generations have increasing gram-negative coverage...sometimes at the expense of reduced gram-positive activity.
Fourth-generation cephalosporins are considered "broad spectrum" with both gram-negative and gram-positive coverage.
