AstraZeneca will be kicking their marketing machine into high gear for their new proton pump inhibitor, Nexium (esomeprazole)... before their patent on Prilosec (omeprazole) expires this year.

Nexium is the S-isomer of Prilosec. Prilosec is a mixture of S- and R-isomers.

The S-isomer is metabolized more slowly...resulting in higher and more prolonged serum concentrations.
