Help Patients Sort Through Thermometer Options

Cold and flu season will have patients asking which type of thermometer to use when checking for fever.

Digital thermometers are inexpensive...and most can be used to measure temps orally, rectally, and under the arm.

Send patients to the pharmacist for help deciding which route to use. Rectal temps are generally best for infants and young kids since they're the most accurate. Oral temps are a good option for patients age 4 and older...and underarm temps are usually the least accurate.
