The American College of Gastroenterology just released new guidelines to prevent and treat ulcers caused by NSAIDs.

This is a big problem. Up to 20% of patients taking NSAIDs for arthritis get ulcers. Serious GI complications result in up to 400,000 hospitalizations and 8,000 deaths per year.

Prophylactic therapy is recommended for high-risk patients. This means people with a prior history of ulcers or GI bleeding...over 60...on a high NSAID dose...or taking corticosteroids or anticoagulants.
