Merck is busy putting out fires about reports that Fosamax is leading to esophageal side effects.

Fosamax (alendronate) CAN irritate the esophageal mucosa. It's no surprise...in fact it's in the package labeling. But the severity of some cases seems to be worse than expected.

About 3 dozen patients have been hospitalized for severe esophageal irritation, erosions, and ulcerations.
